Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Justice are defining features of UCLA Ed&IS and we embrace them as a source of strength. Our differences — of race, ethnicity, gender, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity, age, language, socioeconomic status, (dis)abilities, national origin, experience and more — enhance our ability to achieve the school’s core missions of public service, teaching and research.

At UCLA Ed&IS our mission is to build an equitable, diverse, inclusive and just learning and working environment, by holding ourselves accountable to our professed ideals.

The Office of Justice, Equity, Diversity, Inclusion (OJEDI) shares Ed&IS’ commitment to combat inequities and racism. In order to fulfill our purpose and live our values, we aim to make our commitment to justice, diversity, equity, and inclusion evident in our mission, vision, organizational structures, policies, and practices. We are accountable to each other and transparent in our pursuit of equity. We will honor different and unique identities and nurture an accessible, welcoming and respectful environment for all members in our Ed&IS community.

Our Community
Diversity in our community is critical for us to fulfill our social justice mission. Diversity enriches the educational and work experiences of our community members. Ed&IS strives to increase the racial and ethnic diversity in our students, faculty and staff members, which is critical to our success.

"To me, working towards Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion is striving to uplift the voices of other graduate students while supporting EDI initiatives and nudging for meaningful changes. As a Social Research Methodology Ph.D. student and the 2020-21 Co-chair for the Graduate Student Association at UCLA Ed&IS, committing to EDI is becoming aware of the systems in place that create and perpetuate inequities, while thinking deeply about how to remedy and heal structures that continue to omit diverse voices. Most of all, it’s constantly doing the hard work in advocating for our peers, to be in dialogue so others are acknowledged, and ultimately, understood."

As the UCLA Lab School Assistant Principal, EDI is a lens that guides decisions in every area of our school—operations, instruction, strategic planning, and well-being. Through this lens we foster social justice and a culture of equity."

Creating a Culture of Advocacy and Accountability

Incident Resolution

The UCLA School of Education & Information Studies is dedicated to creating an institutional culture of advocacy and accountability; one that is in line with UCLA Ed&IS' commitment to scholarly rigor, social justice, inclusiveness, and democratic practice. This institutional imperative requires that we not only instill these values in our teaching and learning, but in our organizational practices as well.

The reality is that, despite our best intentions, maintaining the highest level of institutional quality and support is an aspirational ideal to strive and constantly improve. There will always be moments in which an organization will fall short of its goals. And no matter how good an organization we’ve created at UCLA Ed&IS, we can, and should, always strive for continual self-reflection and improvement, particularly in providing a welcoming and supportive intellectual and professional environment for all UCLA Ed&IS students, staff, and faculty.

What we cannot tolerate are acts of hostility and bias that disrupt a person’s ability to fully and safely participate in the scholarly and professional work of our community. Hostile acts are understood as any demeaning, derogatory or otherwise offensive behavior directed toward any individual on the basis of race, gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation, religion or other group characteristics. Such behavior runs contradictory to the institutional values that matter most to us as UCLA Ed&IS community members.
