The application for Fall 2024 admission will open on April 1, 2024 and close on April 12, 2024 at 5PM.  For more information about the eligibility requirements to apply for the major or pre-major, please see the Admission section.

Major and Pre-Major Internal Applications

Our program offers interdisciplinary perspectives, including from the fields of developmental psychology, sociology, and comparative education. It will also include a strong component in educational research and evaluation, preparing students for both future graduate study as well as for their careers.

Students in the Education and Social Transformation major will learn the following:

Ability to Analyze Education in Social and Political Contexts with an understanding of:

1. The educational landscape in our country

2. The science of learning and human development in educational settings

3. Education and educational institutions in social, cultural, and historical contexts and the impact of these contexts on educational ideals and practices, and on society as a whole

4. Organizational cultures and dynamics and the ability to analyze and critique global, national, and local educational policies for effective leadership in promoting equity and liberation rather than stratification and oppression

5. How to interpret social data and research and to critically evaluate research studies.

6. How to apply these understandings to imagine, assess, and implement solutions to specific problems in education.

7. How to communicate clearly and cogently.

8. Multiple perspectives, diversity, pluralism, and social justice.

Program Learning Outcomes

After admission to UCLA, students must complete an internal admission process to officially declare the Education and Social Transformation major and transfer to the School of Education and Information Studies. 

Two lower-division courses (EDUC 10 or EDUC 11 and EDUC 35) must be taken for a letter grade and passed with a grade of “C” or better. Undergraduate students may repeat a total of 16 units, and only those courses in which they receive a grade of “C-” or lower. “NP” or “U” grades may be repeated to gain unit credit. Repetition of a course more than once requires the approval of the Dean and is granted only under extraordinary circumstances.

Current UCLA students who were not admitted directly to the Education and Social Transformation pre-major upon admission to UCLA may complete the internal admission process to declare the pre-major or major in Education and Social Transformation. Please note that continuing students beyond the Fall of their third year are not eligible to apply for the major or the pre-major. 

To be eligible to apply for the pre-major, students must:

Not be beyond the Spring of their second year of study as a freshman admit

The latest a student can submit an application for the pre-major is during the Spring of their second year of study as a freshman admit. 

Transfer students are not eligible to apply for the pre-major after they have been admitted to UCLA.  

Admission into the pre-major does not guarantee admission into the major. Pre-major students must meet all of the eligibility requirements to apply for the major and complete the admission process for the major.

To be eligible to apply for the major, students must:

Complete the two lower-division courses for the major (EDUC 10 or EDUC 11 and EDUC 35) with a letter grade of "C" or better

Not be beyond the Fall of their third year of study as a freshman admit

The latest a student can submit an application for the major is during the Fall of their third year of study as a freshman admit. 

Continuing students must complete the preparation for the major by the end of their second year to be able to apply by the Fall of their third year. Please note that the completion of the prerequisite courses and the major application does not guarantee admission to the major.

Once admitted to UCLA under the pre-major in Education and Social Transformation, new transfer students must enroll in the two lower-division courses for the major and submit the online application to officially declare the Education and Social Transformation major during their first term at UCLA. 

Students who successfully enroll in EDUC 10 and EDUC 35 and apply to the major during their first term will be granted conditional admission to the major contingent upon the following: 

Completion of the two lower-division courses for the major (EDUC 10 or EDUC 11 and EDUC 35) with a letter grade of "C" or better 

Earning an overall UC GPA of 2.3 or higher 

If you are a transfer student that is not eligible to declare the Education and Social Transformation major, we recommend that you consider pursuing the Education Studies minor. 

The internal application for continuing students is available in Fall, Winter, and Spring. We do not accept applications in the Summer. The application process will be for admission into the major or pre-major for the following term. For example, the Fall 2023 application is for admission into the major or pre-major effective Winter 2024.

After submitting the online application, students will be notified via MyUCLA Messages about the results of their application. Students who are offered admission to the major or pre-major will be sent their offer letter via MyUCLA Messages with the required admission forms attached. 

Students who are offered admission to the pre-major must return the required admission forms by the deadline indicated in the offer letter to accept the offer of admission. If we do not receive the required admission forms via MyUCLA Messages by the deadline, the offer of admission to the major will be rescinded.

Students who are offered admission to the major must return the required admission forms and complete the Community Engagement Series Workshop/BruinLearn Module by the deadline indicated in the offer letter to accept the offer of admission. If we do not receive the required admission forms via MyUCLA Messages by the deadline or the student fails to complete the required workshop/module by the deadline, the offer of admission to the major will be rescinded.

Admissions Decision Notification (via MyUCLA Message) - Friday of Week 3 (Notices are sent between 8am and 5pm on that day)

IMPORTANT NOTICE: For the Spring 2024 application for Fall 2024 admission, the Admission Decision Notifications will be released on Friday of Week 4 and the Admission Forms will be due Friday of Week 5.

If a student does not successfully complete all parts of the admission process during an admission cycle, they will not be added to the major or  pre-major and their admission offer will be voided. The student may apply in future admission cycles as long as they continue to meet the eligibility requirements.

Students are responsible for making sure that all requirements and deadlines are met if they want to obtain admission into the major or pre-major in Education and Social Transformation. 

Admission

Students interested in pursuing the major in Education and Social Transformation must complete the required lower- and upper-division courses. The major includes 10 lower-division units and 40 upper-division units (approximately 9-10 upper-division courses).


Core Lower-Division Courses
Two lower-division courses (EDUC 10 or EDUC 11 and EDUC 35) must be taken for a letter grade and passed with a grade of “C” or better.


Upper-Division Courses
Required: 9-10 upper-division courses for a minimum of 40 units distributed as follows:


Two (2) courses from each of the following three Areas of Competency

Histories and Philosophies of Education (Education 100-119)
Contexts of Teaching, Learning, and Development (Education 120-149)
Inquiry and Design for Learning (Education 150-169)



At least one (1) additional course in Education, which may come from any of the Areas of Competency or from courses designated as “Electives” (Community Engagement and Social Change 130, Education 170 through 179)



Education 180: Orientation to Community Engagement
Education 180 must be completed prior to taking a Community Engagement Course.



One (1) Community Engagement Course selected from Education M129XP, 130AX, 130BX, 130CX, M131A, M131B, M131C, M142, M144XP, 159, 171, 176, 195, 195CE, or 196XP (some of these courses may also be applied toward an area of competency).
Students must complete Education 180 prior to taking a community engagement course. Courses taken concurrently with or prior to completing EDUC 180 will not satisfy this requirement.



Education 181: Capstone in Education and Social Transformation
Students must complete five out of the six courses from the areas of competency and complete the community engagement course requirement before enrolling in the capstone course.


All courses must be taken for a letter grade.

A minimum of 40 upper division units must be completed for the major.

The major requirements must be completed with an over all GPA of 2.0 or higher.

Courses must not be repeated for additional credit.

A maximum of 8 units of contract courses (195-199) may be applied to the major.

Effective Fall 2021, the Department of Education renumbered many of its courses. Please note that you cannot repeat renumbered courses for additional credit. You are responsible for ensuring that you do not repeat courses that you have already earned credit for. The list of courses that have been renumbered can be found here.

Students may submit a petition to apply a course that not on the approved list toward the major requirements. The request will be reviewed by the faculty committee to determine if course will be acceptable. Please note that these petitions are not guaranteed approval and may be denied.

All restrictions on Education upper-division courses (except EDUC 180 and EDUC 181) will be lifted at 8:00 am on the day following the last second pass enrollment appointment time so any students may enroll in any remaining open seats

For undergraduate courses, Education Department faculty will not issue PTE numbers except for classes where the enrollment is restricted to instructor consent. Students may place themselves on the wait list of full sections.

The Tentative Course Schedule indicates the courses the Department of Education plans to offer for a given academic year. Please note that all courses are tentative until the finalized schedule of classes is published by the Registrar’s Office. 

The course offerings, meeting times, and locations are subject to change by the department without notice. Please refer to the schedule of classes on the Registrar's Office website for the most up-to-date information about a course. 

Final course offerings for a given term are confirmed when the schedule of classes is officially released via the Registrar's Office website.

The undergraduate student petitions for the School of Education and Information Studies are available here. All the forms are PDF documents that undergraduate students may complete and submit to our office. Please make sure that all your documents are legible. More information about petitions and the review process can be found in the student handbook. 

Please note that all petitions submitted to our office are not guaranteed approval and petitions may be denied. All petitions require 10-15 business days to be reviewed unless otherwise noted on the petition form. Petitions are reviewed in the order they are submitted.

I have questions about the Education and Social Transformation major or pre-major. Who can I talk to?

What is the difference between the Education and Social Transformation major or pre-major and the Education Studies minor?

The major in Education and Social Transformation offers a comprehensive curriculum where students are required to take a set of courses to meet the program learning outcomes developed for the major. The Education Studies minor allows students to take a subset of the courses offered for the major but allows much more flexibility.

Students interested in the major will first need to complete two prerequisite courses. Then, they will take six courses for the three Areas of Competency (two courses each in Histories and Philosophies of Education; Contexts of Teaching, Learning, and Development; and Inquiry and Design for Learning), take an Orientation to Community Engagement course, take one Community Engagement course, take the Capstone course, and one additional course in Education.

The Education Studies minor requires a student to take seven Education courses from the approved list, one of which may be lower-division. With the minor, you have discretion to choose from many of the education courses and it can serve as an excellent complement to your major program of study. 

I am already in the Education Studies minor. Can I change to the Education and Social Transformation major?

If you have taken EDUC 10 or EDUC 11 and EDUC 35, you have fulfilled the pre-requisite courses for the major. You may apply to the Education and Social Transformation major as long as you meet all other admission requirements and are not beyond Fall of your third year of study as a freshman admit.

I am beyond the Fall of my third year as a freshman admit. Can I still complete the new Education and Social Transformation major? I have already taken many Education courses.

Unfortunately, you are unable to apply for the new Education and Social Transformation major. Students must meet all admission requirements and apply by Fall of the third year to be in the major. Our department strongly enforces our admission requirements.

If you would still like to pursue a program in education, we strongly recommend applying for the Education Studies minor if you meet the minor admission requirements and are able to complete the minor requirements prior to graduation. The deadline to apply for the Education Studies minor is the Spring of your third year.

I haven’t taken any Education classes yet but I want to declare the pre-major/major. How do I do that?

The pre-major can be declared without completing an Education course. However, the major can only be declared after completing EDUC 10 or 11 and EDUC 35 with a C or better. 

Once you have met all admission requirements, you can submit the online application to officially declare the Education and Social Transformation pre-major or major. Students must complete the full admission process to officially declare the Education and Social Transformation pre-major/major. Only students who meet all the admission requirements may be offered admission to the minor. Interested students must apply to the Education Studies minor by the spring of their third year. 

What is the application process for the minor, pre-major, and major?

An application will be made available each regular term to be admitted for the following regular academic term. The online application will open on the first day of instruction and will close at 5pm on Friday of Week 2 of the quarter. Application results will be sent via MyUCLA Message Center by Friday of Week 3. If admitted, students are sent instructions and additional forms that must be submitted by Friday of Week 4 in order to accept our offer of admission.  

Failure to submit the necessary forms by the deadline will be taken as a rejection of the offer of admission. Students are welcome to apply in future admission cycles as long as they continue to meet all admission requirements. 

When is the application available and where do I find it?

The application is available in Fall, Winter, and Spring. The link to the online application will be posted on the major or minor web page on the first day of the quarter.

*Submission of Plan of Study and other necessary forms is acceptance of admission. Failure to return Plan of Study and other necessary forms by the deadline means you will not be coded as a student in the Department of Education for the program you applied to (minor, pre-major or major).

What are the course renumbering updates that took effect Fall 2021?

Effective Fall 2021, the Department of Education renumbered many of its courses. Please note that you cannot repeat renumbered courses for additional credit. You are responsible for ensuring that you do not repeat courses that you have already earned credit for. The list of courses that have been renumbered can be found here.

Can graduate level courses be applied for the minor or major requirements?  

Graduate level courses may not be applied toward the major/minor requirements since they are not on the approved list of courses for the major or minors. 

Students may petition to request an exception to apply a graduate level course toward the major/minor but approval for these petitions are very rarely granted. These petitions must be submitted prior to starting the graduate level course.

We strongly recommend taking an undergraduate course from the approved list instead. 

If I am an Education and Social Transformation Major can I also apply for the Education Studies Minor or Information and Literacy Minor?

The Education Studies minor and the Information and Media Literacy minor is not open to students in the Education and Social Transformation major. Students may not declare both minors.
