Students share views on returning to school in a time of uncertainty

The voice of young people too often goes unheard in educational research.  But the new research journal Community Schooling, from the UCLA Center for Community Schools, is trying to do something about that.  The journal will regularly feature research by students.

In its just-published first issue student researchers at the UCLA Community School explored how teachers, students, and parents are feeling about coming back to school after so many months of online learning due to the COVID 19 pandemic.  They shared their findings in a great new Podcast for the journal.

For their research, they interviewed students from 1st to 12th grade and talked with teachers and staff.  They also sought out the views of parents of students at the community school.

“We wanted to capture the different perspectives and to come to an overall understanding of how they feel being back at UCLA Community School and how they have been doing so far, said Adriana Rios-Cruz, one of the student researchers.

The research team included UCLA Community School students Diego Chavez, Eduardo Galindo-Munoz, April Mendoza Jimenez, Nareli Lopez, Adriana Rios-Cruz, Alex Alejo Salvador and Yao Wang.

Be sure to check out their research and listen in to their podcast at https://communityschooling.gseis.ucla.edu/journal-issue-1-youth-research-returning-to-school/
