HERI Celebrates 50 Years of “The American Freshman”

“Celebrating 50 Years of Impact: The Past, Present, and Future of HERI” will take place on Wednesday, May 25, beginning at 4:30 p.m. in the Sequoia Room at the UCLA Faculty Center. The event will celebrate 50 years of “The American Freshman,” a national annual survey administered by HERI’s Cooperative Institutional Research Program (CIRP) that is a widely used source for informing educational policy and promoting institutional improvement through the increased understanding of higher education, its impact on students, and what those students bring to higher education from the society they inhabit.

“The Higher Education Research Institute is proud to celebrate the 50 anniversary of ‘The American Freshman,’” says Cecilia Rios-Aguilar, Director of HERI. “Our surveys are part of the most important data collections efforts in the nation to improve our higher education system. We look forward to celebrating our major milestones and our vision for decades to come.”

Speakers will include Wasserman Dean Marcelo Suárez-Orozco, Rios-Aguilar, Alexander Astin, Founder of HERI and Emeritus Professor of Education; Sylvia Hurtado, Professor of Education and former HERI Director; Kevin Eagan, Assistant Professor-in-Residence and Director, CIRP, and Managing Director, HERI; and Victor Saenz, Associate Professor in the Department of Educational Administration at the University of Texas at Austin.

Guests will be welcomed with light refreshments at 4:30 p.m., to be followed by the program from 5:15-6:30. A reception will follow the program.
