Dean’s Distinguished Speaker Series Features Chancellor Marcelo Suárez-Orozco
Chancellor of UMass Boston and scholar of immigration will speak on his new book, “Education: A Global Impact for a Time of Crisis.”
The Dean's Distinguished Speaker Series welcomes Marcelo Suárez-Orozco, chancellor of University of Massachusetts Boston to UCLA, to speak about his new book, "Education: A Global Impact for a Time of Crisis," published by Columbia University Press.
Wasserman Dean Christina (Tina) Christie will moderate a discussion with Suárez-Orozco, former dean of the-then UCLA Graduate School of Education and Information Studies, who co-edited "Education: A Global Impact for a Time of Crisis," with Carola Suárez-Orozco, Distinguished Professor of Counseling & School Psychology at UMass and co-founder of Re-Imagining Migration.
Participants in the discussion include Cindy Fan, UCLA vice provost of international studies and global engagement; John Rogers, faculty director of UCLA Center X and director of the UCLA Institute for Democracy, Education and Access (IDEA); and Maryanne Wolf, director of the UCLA Center for Dyslexia, Diverse Learners, and Social Justice.
Suárez-Orozco's research focuses on cultural psychology and psychological anthropology, with an emphasis on education, globalization, and migration. His award-winning books and edited volumes have been published by Harvard University Press, Stanford University Press, University of California Press, Cambridge University Press, New York University Press, and others.
His scholarly papers, in a range of disciplines and languages, appear in leading journals including Harvard Educational Review, Harvard Business Review, Revue Française de Pédagogie (Paris), Cultuur en Migratie (Leuven), Temas: Cultura, Ideologia y Sociedad (Havana), Ethos, The Journal of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, Harvard Policy Review, and others. Suárez-Orozco regularly contributes to national and international media outlets including The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Los Angeles Times, U.S News and World Report, The Huffington Post, CNN, NPR, CNN Español, MSNBC and others.
Suárez-Orozco is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and currently serves on its Governance and Trust Board. He is also a member of the National Academy of Education, serves on the the Board of Advisors of the Thomas Mann House, and is a trustee of the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching.
Suárez-Orozco has served as Special Advisor to the Chief Prosecutor, The International Criminal Court, The Hague, The Netherlands, and is a recipient of the Mexican Order of the Aztec Eagle. In January of 2018, His Holiness Pope Francis appointed Suárez-Orozco to the Executive Committee of the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences; Pope Francis has provided the foreword for “Education: A Global Impact for a Time of Crisis.”
On July 4, 2018, the Carnegie Corporation of New York named Suárez-Orozco a “Great Immigrant / Great American.” A native of Argentina, Suárez-Orozco is a product of the California master plan, having studied in community college and at the University of California Berkeley, where he received his AB, MA, and PhD in anthropology.
