Christine Borgman Nominated for Membership to Sigma Xi

Christine L. Borgman, UCLA Distinguished Research Professor in Information Studies, accepted nomination for full membership in Sigma Xi, the scientific research honor society. She will be inducted into the society via an online ceremony on Thursday, March 18. 

Borgman, who directs the Center for Knowledge Infrastructures at UCLA, says that the nomination to the organization, which publishes the journal American Scientist, came as “a very pleasant surprise.”

“Sigma Xi is for scholars who are recognized as scientists, but it’s also committed to promoting science and the integrity of ethical high-quality research,” she says.

Borgman holds the title of University of California Presidential Chair in Information Studies, Emerita. She continues to conduct research in scientific data practices and write. The Center’s publications since early 2020 include seven journal articles, a workshop report, and the French translation of her most recent book. Her publications are available via the Center’s site or personal website, both of which link to the UC eScholarship repository.

Professor Borgman is giving several talks in March and April to venues in Europe and the U.S. These include: 

March 19: Keynote for the 2021 Women in Data Science Charlottesville, presented by the School of Data Science at the University of Virginia, “Big Data, Little Data, or No Data? A Social Science Perspective on Data Science.”

April 8: Public lecture to the Centre for Contemporary and Digital History (C2DH), University of Luxembourg, “Big Data, Little Data, or No Data? Scholarship, Stewardship, and Humanities Research.”

April 22: Seminar for the Netherlands Graduate Research School of Science, Technology and Modern Culture, “Data, Code, and Pipelines: Knowledge Infrastructures in Astronomy.”
