AERA Spotlight: UCLA Education Showcased in Presidential Sessions
Wide range of UCLA educational expertise and research showcased through in-person and virtual sessions.
Researchers from the UCLA Department of Education will present their work during Presidential Sessions at the Annual Meeting of the American Educational Research Association (AERA), taking place in San Diego, April 21-26, as well selected sessions offered on a virtual platform. In the morning of Saturday, April 23, Professor Kim Gomez will participate in a session on “Reimagining Methodological Approaches for Disrupting Anti-Blackness in STEM Education,” 8 – 9:30 a.m., and Ung-Sang Lee, UCLA postdoctoral researcher, and Marcus Van, a teacher at Mann UCLA Community School, will share their perspectives on “Research-Practice Partnerships for Educational Transformation,” also at 8- 9:30 a.m.
On Saturday afternoon, Professor Li Cai, director of CRESST and UCLA Vice Provost of Enrollment Management Youlanda Copeland-Morgan, will take part in a session on “What Happened to Diversity and Equity When Admissions Tests Became Optional?” In addition, Professors Tyrone Howard and Walter Allen will lead “The 25th Conversations with Senior Scholars on Advancing Research and Professional Development Related to Black Education.” On Sunday, April 24, Professor Howard, who is AERA’s 2022-23 President-Elect, will also present his research at a session on “Cultivating and Expanding Equitable Education Opportunity by Implementing Multicultural Research, Policy, and Practice,” at 8 – 9:30 a.m.
Presidential Sessions on Monday, April 25 will begin at 8-9:30 a.m., when Professor Cecilia Rios-Aguilar will participate in a conversation on “Strengthening California Community Colleges: Research and Leadership Frontiers at a Time of Recovery.” Rios-Aguilar, who serves as Associate Dean of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion at SEIS, will also take part in a virtual Presidential Session, “Toward the Fulfillment of Full Personhood: The Persistent Invisibility of Latinx Communities Across Institutions,” at 9:45 – 11:15 a.m.
In the afternoon on Monday, Professor Louis Gomez will take part in a discussion on, “Continuous Improvement Research and Critical Theoretical Perspectives: Bridging Two Conversations with a Common Goal?” , 11:30 a.m. – 1 p.m. In addition, two virtual sessions featuring UCLA researchers will take place, with Casey Philip Wong presenting on, “Centering Cultural and Artistic Practice in Scientific Design,” from 2:30 – 4 p.m., and Assistant Professor of Education Ananda Marin, will share perspectives on “Education’s Role in Cultivating Indigenous Futures,” from 4:15 - 5:45 p.m.
